New episode of our consumer test series. As a reminder, every week we test products on sale in the six supermarket chains (Delhaize, Colruyt, Aldi, Lidl, Intermarché and Carrefour) by comparing the major brands to “white products” or distributor brands. The final score for each product is out of twenty points: 2.5 points for the appearance of the packaging, the appearance of the product, the nutritional value and the readability of the label, and 5 points for the taste and the quality-ratio. price. This week, we tested the wonderful ones. FYI, there is no reference brand for this test, and Colruyt no longer offers this product as its own brand.
Aspect of the packaging: it mightn’t have been simpler for everyone. A hard plastic package that contained one or two wonderful ones. No effort on the logo, except something a little more elaborate for Lidl. The only product that stands out from the competition is that of Delhaize, with cardboard packaging that looks a little more like a local pastry shop.
The big test for brands: the Easter egg hunt did not give the same results as last year (COMPARATIVE)
Appearance of the product: the wonderful Aldi was very classic, with a cherry placed on the whipped cream, which was too little present for our taste. Same remark for Lidl, by the way. For Delhaize, it was much prettier, it smelled better and it looked more like it came from a pastry shop. For Carrefour, the marvelous was bigger than the others, and therefore also more delicious. It made you want to indulge in a sweet treat. The rating is also good for Intermarché.
Nutritional value: Nutri-Score E for everyone.
Label readability: It was really illegible for the Aldi product. It was – in our case – poorly pasted and made reading even more difficult, with the text much too small and half-erased. For Delhaize, it was better, but not perfect either. It was readable but still lacked information. For Carrefour, we returned to the level of Aldi, unfortunately. It was better at Intermarché, but we are still waiting for a painting or something colorful and we had to return the package (difficult to save the marvelous thing) to find all the information. Finally, it might have been better at Lidl, but small, white writing on a transparent label itself placed on a transparent package is not easy to decipher.
The big test of brands: no need to pay twice as much to find a good quiche Lorraine (COMPARATIVE)
Taste: we start with Aldi. It was extremely sweet, but quite good. The chocolate tasted good, but the meringue was too muted and lacked finesse. Same observation for Lidl. We were not disappointed, but not really thrilled either. For Delhaize, it was several divisions above. The whipped cream was light but also delicious, the chocolate well balanced and the meringue very present and tasty. There was reason to be disappointed with the Carrefour product. It was very sweet, and that’s regarding it… The taste was consistent, as were the textures. For Intermarché, it was very good. The only downside was that it really lacked meringue.
Value for money: here are the prices in order, for a tray of two wonderful ones (except at Carrefour, one piece, but large): Delhaize (€5.75), Intermarché (€4.79), Lidl and Aldi (€3.99) and Carrefour (€3.50).
