The precarious situation of the farmers exploded before the eyes of the whole of Europe over a month ago. Dissatisfied with European decisions (common agricultural policy) and demanding price increases for certain products, farmers demonstrated their anger through various blockades, including highways or supermarket distribution centers.

A dissatisfaction that led to a decision by certain supermarkets (Delhaize, Colruyt or even ALDI) to increase the prices given to beef producers to better pay farmerspp. A first measure that should lead to others, although ending the super promotions has already been ruled out. Among our neighbors, some are already going further… although the decision made was not based on the farmers.

A great first

In the Netherlands, the supermarket chain Jumbo will be the first to end promotions on fresh meat. This measure, taken at the request of animal welfare organisations, will apply to all fresh beef, pork and chicken, in stores and online, by the end of May.

The animal rights organization “Wakker Dier” has been campaigning once morest campaigns on cheaper meat since 2010. It therefore responds with great satisfaction to “the courage Jumbo is showing”, a spokesperson said on Friday. “Meat deals increase meat sales enormously. And the animals pay the price with deplorable living conditions.” Wakker Dier now hopes that other supermarkets will follow its example.

“1+1 free”, “2+2 free”…: good news for Belgian customers, big promotions in supermarkets saved… temporarily!

Jumbo is also studying the possibility of developing meat substitutes, so that consumers consume more plant-based proteins. A decision that will have consequences for us? Not really since the end of these promotions will not be used in Belgium.
