Superbike and MotoGP Test Results at Portimao: Unofficial Record Breaking Times and More

2024-01-30 13:21:00

On Monday, Superbike rookie Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Ducati) set the fastest time in the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve in the hinterland of Portimao with a time of 1:39.913 minutes. On the second day of testing on Tuesday, the track is once more open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Italian used a qualifier in the morning and drove in 1:39.275 minutes, significantly faster than Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki) in his pole record in 2022 (1 :39,610 mins).

Since records can only be set during a race weekend, this is an unofficial record.

It didn’t last long anyway: at 12:35 p.m., Portimao is an hour behind CET, BMW newcomer Toprak Razgatlioglu took the lead with a time of 1:39.225 minutes; the Turk also had a qualifier installed.

Behind them at lunchtime there is a gap of 0.7 seconds to Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha) and Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Ducati).

Philipp Öttl (GMT94 Yamaha), the only German in the Superbike World Championship field, was not able to improve his time from Monday and is almost 2.5 seconds behind.

On Monday, the Petronas Honda team with Tarran Mackenzie and Adam Norrodin were only able to complete installation laps; on Tuesday, Midori Moriwaki’s duo is at the back of the field so far.

Michael Rinaldi (Motocorsa Ducati) can also be found far back, but the Italian has only completed six laps so far due to technical problems with his V4R.

As always with test drives, the times are only comparable to a limited extent because the teams follow very different programs and the drivers are allowed to use everything from the hardest racing tire to the super soft qualifier. This explains the sometimes large residues.
