“Super Mario Bros. Wonder”: A craze that stands the test of time

The announcement of the game Super Mario Bros. Wonder had the effect of a bomb this summer, the fans wasting no time in spreading their overflowing enthusiasm in torrents. The magnitude of this reaction took even the creators of this new offering by surprise. “It exceeded all our expectations,” says director Shiro Mouri.

Say that Super Mario Bros. Wonder is expected would be an understatement: the trailer, unveiled with great fanfare last June, has more than 8 million views to date, the counter continuing to tick tirelessly. The comments, abundantly positive, invariably oscillate between joy and exaltation, emotions testified to with great blows of comments and thumbs up in the air, both on YouTube and on social networks.

In short, the enthusiasm for Mario, Luigi, Peach and their gang has not diminished one iota since the first game in the saga, launched almost 40 years ago. On the contrary, even.

“It’s very exciting,” says producer Takashi Tezuka, in a virtual interview with The newspaper.

“We are confident that we have created something new and exciting for the players, but at the same time we cannot be absolutely certain until they have it in their hands. So we are curious to see the reactions. Just thinking about it, it’s very exciting,” he continues.

At his side, director Shiro Mouri, nods, smiling.

“We took care to include a lot of mystery and surprises in this game, so I can’t wait to see how people will welcome it,” he says.

Players will still have to wait a few more weeks before exploring the recesses of this Super Mario Bros. Wonder, with the game only slated to launch on October 20. However, they know very well what to expect, the official images and videos having been carefully dissected by the big fans of the saga.

An elephant in… the game

One image alone has aroused many reactions: we can indeed see the mustachioed plumber transformed… into an elephant. With his greyish complexion and brandished trunk, the hero of our childhood is completely transformed, only the traditional uniform and cap allow us to recognize him.

This new mutation is the result of a complex reflection among the designers who were looking for a way to offer a “refreshing” gaming experience to fans of the saga, in addition to exploiting the full potential of flowers, cornerstones of Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

“We wanted to allow Mario to become more imposing, but also allow him to hit obstacles and carry water to water faded flowers, for example, and thus create a mysterious reaction,” says Shiro Mouri.

“And the way for him to achieve all of these things was self-evident: turning Mario into the elephant!” he finishes.

Alone or with others

The design team also focused on the multiplayer experience, here improved both in local and online mode. Not only can up to four players collaborate in a single game, they can now do so simultaneously.

No need, in fact, for everyone to wait their turn to finally run solo.

“We wanted the multi-person experience to be completely devoid of stress and downtime,” sums up the director.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder will be available on Nintendo Switch from October 20.
