Let me introduce myself! I am Layla Benabid, the illustrator of “Super Hedgehog” but also a defender of animal rights and the environment.
I have been an author and illustrator for 12 years. When you look at my bibliography, you quickly realize that my favorite subjects are non-human animals.
Indeed, whether it is my collection of small books without text “Cartoons” published by Rêves Bleus, my popular science album with Sébastien Moro “Les Brains de la Ferme” published by La plage or “Mamayou” written by Marie Tibi published by The Great Garden, sentient beings are everywhere!
I’ve always loved all these hairy, feathered or scaly individuals.
Vegan and anti-speciesist for more than 10 years, formerly an activist in an association in Marseille, I campaign today thanks to my stylus. Between education, rants, humor and cute drawings, there is something for everyone!
It was therefore quite natural that I agreed to illustrate the “Super Hérisson” project when it was presented to me in September 2022 by its author Véronique Cauchy, who has already published three albums in the “Super amis du garden “.
“Super Hedgehog” was released in bookstores in mid-September 2023. It is a work which allows a first playful approach to our biodiversity and which underlines the importance of protecting the animals in our garden.
For me, it is important to raise awareness regarding the protection of nature and its inhabitants. Indeed, in the midst of the climate crisis and the fall in biodiversity, it seems necessary to me that artists get involved by producing what I consider to be “useful” albums. Tell, explain, make children and their parents want to protect the living. And we protect what we love, and to love, you have to know.
So, “Super Hedgehog” is typically the kind of project that excites me enormously.
The first feedback on this album was not long in coming at the book fair upon its release.. Readers immediately fell for the front cover which made them want to leaf through the album. “This hedgehog is so funny!” » will be the most heard phrase at the signing table, followed by “He’s so cute!” “.
