Super Blue Moon August 30 and 31: details of the biggest and brightest full Moon of the year

August has been a month full of fascinating astronomical events in different parts of the world. From the Super Sturgeon Moon to the Perseid Meteor Shower, space lovers have had the chance to experience incredible celestial phenomena.

And although it seemed that the month had already offered all its splendor, there is still one more event to enjoy: the Super Blue Moon. This incredible full Moon will be observed on August 30 and 31, 2023.

A Super Moon is a phenomenon that occurs when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit., known as perigee. At that time, the Moon appears slightly brighter and regarding 14% larger than usual.

As NASA experts explain, the difference in size is similar to that between a quarter and a nickel. This closeness to the planet allows the natural satellite to appear brighter in the night sky.

But the Super Moon at the end of August has an additional detail that makes it even more special: it’s also a blue moon.

This term is used when two full Moons occur in the same month.. Normally, the lunar cycle lasts around 29.5 days, so having two full Moons in a single month is not very frequent and usually happens every two or three years.

It is important to note that the term “Blue Moon” does not mean that the natural satellite actually acquires that color. However, on very rare occasions, the Moon can take on a slightly bluish hue due to the scattering of red light wavelengths in air. However, this is extremely rare to witness.

According to NASA, approximately 25% of all Full Moons are considered Super Moons, while only 3% are Blue Moons. For this reason, the time between one Super Blue Moon and another can be between 10 and 20 years.

It will be necessary to wait until January and March 2037 to enjoy once more a coincidence between a Super Moon and a Blue Moon.

Astronomy lovers and those who enjoy looking at the night sky will have a unique opportunity to observe the Super Blue Moon at the end of August. Do not miss this wonderful opportunity to marvel at the beauty of space.
