Sunwall: Overcoming Challenges in Sunflower Cultivation and Maximizing Yield Potential

During these three years of projects, agronomists were faced with very different summers: very humid in 2021, very dry in 2022, and an alternation of dry weather and rain this year. Last year, unsurprisingly, the harvest was exceptional. Two years ago, on the other hand, the grains had difficulty drying on the vine. “We had to harvest between rains, the grains were very wet. We therefore had to dry them, which is an operation dreaded by traders. It is an oilseed, therefore quite quickly flammable. We have already experienced dryer fires in the past due to sunflowers.“, she explains.

With aphids, we had big yield problems: we lost up to a ton of yield, on a crop supposed to produce three tons.

Sunflower cultivation adapts to all types of soil and requires little fertilizer. Hence a growing interest from Walloon farmers. Today, around thirty have joined the Sunwall sector. They nevertheless have to deal with birds that come to devour the seedlings or flower heads ready to be harvested, or aphids that ravage part of the plot, like last year. “With these aphids, we had big yield problems: we lost up to a ton of yield, on a crop supposed to produce three tons.“, continues the project manager.
