As every year at the beginning of July, this year, from Saturday, July 1st to Monday, July 3rd, 2023, the “Betrothed Pilgrimage” of the Mariazell parish to the Sonntagberg took place for the 344th time, on foot, by bike or by car.
Punctually at 6:00 a.m. it was that time once more this year: the Mariazell town pastor, Fr. Christoph Pecolt, gave the travel blessing to the 25 pilgrims on foot this time in the Basilica of Mariazell.

Beforehand, like every year, the luggage was loaded into the transporter, Martin Brandl took care of the transport once more this year, this time together with Bernhard Fleischmann. After the blessing, the group set out on the three-day hike to Sunday Mountain. Around 80 km of route with more than 3,500 meters of ascent and almost 3,700 meters of descent had to be mastered once more this year.
The group of pilgrims was accompanied by sometimes heavy rain on the first two days, and so the rain protection was a constant companion. The first section led the group of pilgrims over the source of the Erlauf up to the Feldwiesalm, down to Langau and from there over the passage to Lunz am See.

On the third day, the group marched through the picturesque hilly landscape of the Mostviertel, while on Monday the cyclists also fought their way from Mariazell to the Sonntagberg, to then receive the group of foot pilgrims there together with many other Mariazellers who had traveled by private car.

After lunch, the service was celebrated together at 4 p.m., followed by a candlelight procession around the basilica. The musical accompaniment to the pilgrimage fair was provided by the MGV Alpenland, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
