Sundance Festival opens in Utah with celebrity guests

Due to the pandemic, the last two editions of the Sundance Film Festival were largely celebrated online, and now numerous celebrity guests and visitors are on site once more in Park City (Utah). The festival for independent productions, founded in the 1980s by Hollywood star Robert Redford, opened on Thursday evening (local time). Filmmakers such as Daisy Ridley and Eugenio Derbez attended film premieres at the start of the ten-day festival.

More than a hundred films from two dozen countries are on the program, including documentaries regarding Michael J. Fox, Brooke Shields and the singer Little Richard.

Among the twelve candidates in the “World Cinema Documentary Competition” category are the German-Ukrainian production “Iron Butterflies” and the documentary “5 Seasons of Revolution” produced by Germany, Syria, Norway and the Netherlands. The drama “Sorcery”, produced by Germany, Chile and Mexico, is represented in the international feature film competition.

Every year well-known actors and Hollywood directors also get involved in the Sundance Festival. This time, stars like Anne Hathaway, Cynthia Erivo, Emilia Clarke, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Gael García Bernal are presenting their indie films.

The supernatural thriller “Nanny” won the top prize at the Sundance Film Festival last January. In 2021, the deaf drama “Coda” won the top prizes from the jury and the viewers, later “Coda” was celebrated as “Best Film” at the Oscars.
