Sunbird suspends its app that is too insecure with iMessages

After years of inaction and ridicule, Apple has decided to move to the RCS standard, but on its own terms, since it will not abandon the security of iMessage. Security put to the test with Nothing’s experiments.

Don’t touch my blue bubble!

Last week, we learned that the Nothing firm had tinkered with a system to allow its users to benefit from blue bubbles. For this, she had set up a sort of relay with Mac minis. And it was the latter who sent/received the messages to transfer them to your correspondent on Android! For this, the company used the iCloud identifiers communicated -voluntarily- during registration.

As one might imagine, the assembly was far from secure and led to access to personal data normally encrypted: name, first name, telephone number, email, postal addresses and other elements of contact cards or vCards!

Obviously, Nothing had to quickly put an end to this adventure and stop the Nothing Chats. In practice, remember that it had simply gone through a service provider, Sunbird, to ensure compatibility between its messaging application -Nothing Chats.

And now it is Sunbird’s turn to suspend the activity of its platform – which it made official by an email to its users. Indeed, she declared that she was investigating the security issues raised by the Nothing Chats application. Introduced in 2022, the Sunbird application was intended to be cross-platform and support iMessage, SMS/MMS, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp – a kind of interoperability before its time!
