Sunak resigns as prime minister and party leader: – I’m sorry

– As a result of this election result, I am stepping down as party leader. Not right away, but as soon as the formalities are in place to choose my successor, Sunak said on Friday morning in a statement outside the prime minister’s residence in Downing Street.

– I have given this job everything I have. But you have sent a clear message, and your assessment is the only one that matters, said Sunak.

The speech started with Sunak once more apologizing for the election defeat:

– I’m sorry.

He also added that he takes responsibility for the crushing defeat of the Conservative Party.

Audience

After Sunak has been to Buckingham Palace and asked King Charles to resign, it is expected that Labor leader Keir Starmer will have an audience to get the government assignment. Starmer is then scheduled to make a statement outside 10 Downing Street as the country’s new prime minister.

Labor made a snap election on Thursday and secured at least 412 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons. This marks the end of 14 years of Conservative governments in Great Britain.

Roset Starmer

Sunak took the time to praise his opponent in his farewell speech.

– Despite our disagreements during this election campaign, he is a decent man with good civic spirit, whom I respect, said Sunak.

He also wished Starmer and his family well in the transition to their new life in the prime minister’s residence.
