Rishi Sunak called today “a day of shame for the British state” and apologized for the thousands of lives lost and tens of thousands more destroyed by the contaminated blood given by the National Health System (NHS).

The tainted blood inquiry’s report reveals a “decade-long ethical failure” from the NHS to the civil service, and down to ministers in successive governments.

Sunak promised that all those whose lives were affected by the so-called “tainted blood scandal” would be compensated.

“Hundreds of thousands of lives have been ruined,” said the British prime minister, but it’s time to “make amends for the mistakes that have been made.”

Details of the compensation plan will be given tomorrow, Tuesday (21/5).

In a similar vein, Sir Keir Starmer welcomed the Prime Minister’s confirmation that compensation would be paid, stressing that the inquiry’s report made it clear that any apology must be accompanied by action.

The official opposition leader added that the Labor Party “will work with him” to get this done quickly.

More than 30,000 people became infected with HIV and hepatitis C from 1970 to 1991 from contaminated products with regarding 3,000 having died since then.
