“SunAir Fountain: Producing Clean Drinking Water from Air with Solar Energy”

sun water is an impact startup currently developing the SunAir Fountain, which looks like a solar panel, but is more like a water panel. The latter captures humidity from the air during the night using a specific adsorbent and condenses it during the day using solar energy to produce drinking water.

In some industrial processes, water vapor in the air is harmful. Techniques have therefore been developed for a long time to capture this water vapour:

• By refrigeration: the air can contain a quantity of water vapor which depends on its temperature. By lowering its temperature close to zero °C using a refrigeration unit, part of the water vapor is condensed. This condensed water forms a mist and it is easy to separate water and air by filtration.

• By adsorption: a specific adsorbent traps the water vapor contained in the air. A flow of air is then directed through a bed of adsorbent which will be loaded with water vapour, up to 40% of its weight. To extract the water vapour, it suffices to heat the adsorbent. Water vapor is released at high temperature and then condensed at room temperature. No refrigeration is needed, just a heat source.

It is an effective alternative to plastic water bottles and the water shortage in some countries, including Morocco and which presents both:

– An economic advantage (the cost of a liter of SunAir Fountain water is at least 5 to 10 times lower than that of bottled water);

– An ecological advantage (no plastic, no transport, no CO2, no pollution).

Thanks to its solution, the startup is targeting two types of markets. First, the two billion people with limited or no access to drinking water and the 2.4 billion people who have access to fresh water (at the tap) but do not drink it for various reasons, buying instead of bottled mineral water, the price and impact of which are such that they are now looking for alternatives. This solution also allows the irrigation of vertical and hydroponic greenhouses and the production of sterile and demineralised water for hospitals, clinics and laboratories.

Thanks to the “Aviram Awards”, where the startup is a semi-finalist in representation of Morocco, Agua de Sol “might soon provide drinking water to millions of people among the 2 billion who currently do not have access to water. potable water.
