“Sun Power in Wallonia: Challenges Faced by Solar Prosumers and Possible Solutions”

2023-04-23 20:01:00

Is the electricity produced by the sun cursed in Wallonia? One might think so in view of the disappointments that have followed one another since the beginning of the establishment of this energy, which is nevertheless clean, abundant and inexhaustible.

Starting with the photovoltaic “bubble”, this colossal debt accumulated over the years following poorly calibrated green certificates granted by the Walloon Region at the turn of the 2010s. A debt that has not yet been completely paid off.

More recently, it is the saga of the “prosumer tariff”, a tax which does not say its name imposed for three years on the owners of solar panels. The case had finally found its epilogue, following fierce political negotiations, in a temporary reimbursement of this fee.

Dropouts, network saturation, complaints from prosumers: photovoltaics under tension in Wallonia

We believed since the file appeased. But today, a new pitfall is looming: “dropouts”. What is it regarding ? When the sun is generous, the electrical network can no longer absorb the amount of electricity produced. Result: the installations are disconnected and the panels no longer produce electricity. A height.

The aberration is all the more incomprehensible in that it was avoidable. Faced with the rise, however foreseeable, of solar panels, the authorities have not thought of strengthening the infrastructure. Many prosumers today pay for this incompetence. After having invested, most often out of their own pocket, they are deprived of the return on investment they expected. Not to mention the tons of CO2 that cannot be saved in this way.

The owners of solar panels, those who have made the effort to invest in an energy that does not contribute to the reinforcement of the greenhouse effect, feel once once more aggrieved. Their anger is legitimate and the authorities would be well advised to respond to it. Solutions exist. Flanders offers bonuses for the purchase of domestic batteries, which would partly allow this lost electricity to be recovered. Others offer compensation.

Photovoltaics: why does the problem of “stalls” reappear?

But what is at stake in this case goes far beyond the fate of prosumers alone. The expected increase in electric cars and the eventual replacement of oil-fired boilers, which are very numerous in the south of the country, by heat pumps will inevitably increase the demand for clean electricity. The photovoltaic industry is part of the solution. As such, everything must be done to allow it to develop. And not bridle her.
