Sun is a trigger for lupus. Learn about autoimmune disease

Systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic inflammatory pathology of autoimmune origin. Symptoms can appear in different organs or systems slowly and progressively over weeks or months.

There are phases of increased disease activity and also periods of remission. It is very common for the person affected by lupus to present manifestations such as tiredness, low fever, weight loss and loss of appetite. However, in some cases, the health problem manifests itself with even more serious symptoms.

The rheumatologist Odirlei André Monticielo clarifies what they are:

  • Skin injuries;
  • Joint pain, with or without swelling;
  • Inflammation of the membranes covering the lungs and heart;
  • Kidney inflammation;
  • Neuropsychiatric disorders;
  • Changes in blood cells.

No cure

Systemic lupus erythematosus has no cure. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to improve the patient’s quality of life and decrease the progression and severity of the disease.

According to Monticielo, the health problem is more frequent in women who are of reproductive age. Between the ages of 15 and 45, lupus is ten times more common in females.

Protection

Those with lupus should avoid sun exposure, in addition to using sunscreen and physical barriers, such as hats and glasses. The sun can trigger inflammatory reactions, affecting not only the skin but also the joints, brain and kidneys.

Treatment

Lupus is treated with anti-inflammatories, antimalarials, corticosteroids and immunosuppressants.

Recently, anifrolumab was incorporated into the Unified Health System (SUS) for the treatment of lupus. Indicated for patients with severe and moderate conditions, the monoclonal antibody manages to block the body’s proteins that lead to systemic inflammation.
