What does a Salzkammergut fan do in Tyrol? He goes to Achensee. There are of course many great places in Tyrol, but hardly any of them combine the mountains and lakes as well as the Achensee region in the Schwaz district.
Sports enthusiasts in particular will get their money’s worth at the “Sea of the Tyroleans”, as the state’s largest lake is called. Every year or every day a different summit victory, usually with a view of Lake Achensee – or several summit victories in one day.
Then we head into the lake, which is at an altitude of 930 meters. Yes, Lake Achensee is not exactly the warmest place to swim – but at 20 degrees in summer (sometimes 18 or 21, depending on the weather the days before and depending on where exactly you swim) it is cool in the truest sense and offers a welcome Cooling down following a long hike or bike ride.
Three examples of good moments high above Lake Achensee between spring and autumn:
Bear head: One of the best views is from the summit of the Bärenkopf in the south of Lake Achensee. From Pertisau (the cross-country skiing town that, together with Maurach, makes up the municipality of Eben) it is around 1,100 meters above sea level. Or you can first take a gondola from the Karwendel mountain railway and thus reduce the ascent to around 500 meters. This is particularly useful if you start the project in the late followingnoon, firstly to avoid the large crowds of hikers and secondly to enjoy the evening sun. The view here covers the entire lake, all the way to the north to the second neighboring community of Achenkirch. You go down on foot and perhaps also on the bike that you took with you in the gondola.
Error header: It is a small, fine mountain, the Feilkopf in the southwest of the lake, to the summit of which you climb around 600 meters, as a hiker or by mountain bike.
With this you can drive to the summit. It only gets really steep at the end – overall a sporty nature experience. The e-bike cyclists, who are clearly in the majority, often show respect. This provides entertaining topics for conversation – if there is enough time for it. The reward is the view of the lake and mountain scenery.
Rofanspitze: The Rofan Mountains, or simply called Rofan, lie east of the lake. Anyone who climbs the Rofanspitze will hike around 1200 meters in altitude.
One variant is to reduce this to around 450 meters in altitude using the Rofan cable car. If you want to do several peaks in one day, this is also easily possible from this high plateau – in mountain hiking mode, but there are also many climbers who tackle several via ferratas in a row. The Rofan Mountains impress with a combination of rugged rocks and gentler, green slopes.
Why Lake Achensee is five meters short in winter
The Achensee, which is up to 133 meters deep, is fed by underground tributaries of the Ampelsbach, the Dürrach and the Achenkircher Springs. In 1927, an underground tunnel was built up to the Jenbach hydroelectric power station, turning Lake Achensee into a natural water reservoir. The drop height of 400 meters is used to generate energy. From October to April, more water is withdrawn than flows in, causing the lake level to drop by up to five meters. By summer, precipitation, meltwater and stream feeders fill the lake once more, meaning the water level reaches normal levels by the beginning of June at the latest.
