Summer’s Mosquito Invasion: Ideal Weather Conditions for Proliferation

Between high temperatures and thunderstorms bringing regular humidity, mosquitoes were able to take advantage of ideal weather conditions to proliferate.

A great season for mosquitoes. This summer’s weather conditions, characterized by high heat and humidity caused by thunderstorms, are “very favorable” to the proliferation of these insects and to significant nuisance from them, according to a pest control official. -mosquitoes in two French regions.

“The higher the temperature, the shorter the reproductive cycles”, explained in particular on France Blue Rémi Foussadier, director of the Interdepartmental Agreement for Mosquito Control (EID) in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté regions.

“Mosquitoes are sensitive to temperature, they are more aggressive in hot weather, and bite more,” he added.

A time adapted to the needs of mosquitoes

As France Bleu points out, the most common mosquitoes in mainland France, with the learned name of Culex pipiens, and tiger mosquitoes, are taking advantage of this summer’s weather conditions, each in their own way.

Both species can produce up to 150 eggs per clutch (regarding five in two months of life). Common mosquitoes lay on the surface of water, while for tiger mosquitoes, “eggs laid on the walls of containers will hatch when submerged and give rise to larvae, evolving into pupae, from which will emerge the adults”, specifies theEID Rhône-Alpes on its website.

If common mosquitoes can adapt to dry climates by seeking persistent water points and laying eggs there, tiger mosquitoes can find their reproduction complicated when they are in environments where the levels of water points do not change. not regularly with the alternation of evaporation and new precipitation.

Importance of prevention

To prevent their spread, it is particularly advisable to limit stagnant water reservoirs. The EID Rhône-Alpes gives as an example the fact of “emptying the cups under the flower pots, the bowls for animals, the tarpaulins covering the piles of wood” or by “hermetically covering all the containers such as the water tanks. rainwater, with a lid or a thin cloth”.

“It is only prevention that can act on the nuisances felt”, underlines Rémi Foussadier.

The period of mosquito activity generally extends from the beginning of May and the end of November, but tends to extend with the multiplication of the periods of early and late mildness. If the ideal temperatures for their development are between 25 and 33°C, they can develop from 15°C for common specimens and even from 10°C for tigers.
