Summer Prevention Tour in Occitanie: Stay Safe from Mosquitoes, Sun, and Swimming Risks!

Friday July 28, the summer tour of the Occitanie regional health agency was in Palavas-les-Flots to make passers-by aware of the risks during the holidays: mosquitoes, sun, swimming…

For three years now, the regional health agency (ARS) Occitanie has been organizing a summer prevention tour in the tourist towns of the region. This Friday, July 28, the “Good summer, Good reflexes” tour made a stop in Palavas-les-flots.

The prevention tour offers five awareness workshops: the sun, tiger mosquitoes and ticks, swimming, hidden sugar and physical activity. Passers-by can explore these different themes through little games: “People have a lot of certainty. Adults tend to think that they know everything and on certain workshops they are surprised, explains Quentin, one of the tour leaders. For example, for hidden sugars, fruit juice is just as sweet as a Fanta. They don’t expect it. They find out how much sugar they give to their children.”

However, in summer, the greatest risk remains the sun and more particularly the consequences it can cause, such as melanoma and skin cancer. In France, 850 new cases of cutaneous melanoma are detected every year. However, 85% of cases of melanoma are due to excessive exposure to the sun and can therefore be easily avoided.

Toxicity of sunscreens

More specifically, the ARS offers a workshop to raise awareness of the toxicity of certain sunscreens with sheets that detail the composition of sunscreens from different brands. “We try to explain that it’s not because it’s in pharmacies that it’s better, it’s not because it’s more expensive that it’s better. And then we push the people to cover up as much as possible. But it’s starting to make its way. On the beaches, we see more and more parasols and small tents for children”, continues Quentin.

For the first time this year, the tour is accompanied by a mobile truck to prevent cardiovascular risks. For this, all it takes is a prick on the finger to calculate the blood sugar and cholesterol levels. “In addition to that, we take blood pressure, pulse and oxygen saturation,” adds Nolhan, the facilitator responsible for welcoming visitors.
For Mathieu Pardell, director of ARS Hérault, doing prevention during the holidays allows “to approach health differently. We take the time and we bring health to everyone.”
