Nuremberg (ots) – “Summertime is festival time. Nuremberg offers a diverse and wide range of cultural activities that are of interest to many national and international guests,” says Yvonne Coulin, Managing Director of the Nuremberg Congress and Tourism Office. “The well-known events will be expanded this year by the new culture festival Wallflowers and by the new cultural meeting place in the congress hall segment #1.”

Music festivals in Nuremberg

From July 21 to 23, 2023, the largest music festival in Germany, the Bardentreffen, will kick off the Nuremberg cultural and festival summer. This free open-air format transforms Nuremberg’s old town into a sonorous music zone. International, national and regional bands from different genres take up the current discussion regarding “cultural appropriation and musical recognition”. On eight stages, under the motto “Stolen Lute?” 90 concerts and a supporting program will take place. By purchasing the program booklet or an instrument pin, festival visitors can help ensure that the Bardentreffen will remain free of charge in the future.

The festival summer in the open air ends with the Klassik Open Air. On two summer evenings, the park in Nuremberg’s Luitpoldhain is transformed into what is probably the greenest concert hall in Europe. Here the two large Nuremberg orchestras celebrate a festival of classical music with free admission. The ensemble of the Nuremberg State Philharmonic will kick things off on July 30, 2023 at 8 p.m. The conductor Joana Mallwitz will conduct the concert musically, which will inspire numerous visitors under the motto “Feste Celebrations”. “Our new darling!” is what it says on August 5, 2023, also at 8 p.m., when the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra and their new conductor Jonathan Darlington invite you to the big music festival. The concerts are best enjoyed with a picnic.

Cultural highlights in Nuremberg

In addition to the numerous music festivals, Nuremberg also offers other cultural highlights in summer 2023: A free open-air program will take place in July between the opera house and the playhouse of the Nuremberg State Theater. Here, local artists and ensemble members of the State Theater invite you to linger on deck chairs, listen and participate.

A new cultural meeting place is currently being created on the historic site of the Nazi Party Rally Grounds in Nuremberg: parts of the circular congress hall building are to be structurally upgraded in future so that more than 7,000 square meters of production and presentation space will be available for artists. The opening of “Segment #1” on the arcade floor marks the start of cultural use. From now on, cultural events will be offered here.

Another cultural highlight can be admired in the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg: the oldest preserved globe in the world. The Behaim Globe was created between 1492 and 1494 and was only recently, on May 18, 2023, included in the international UNESCO register “Memory of the World” and is therefore part of the World Document Heritage. Visitors can visit the world-famous “earth apple” during the opening hours of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum – guided tours explain the history of the globe in more detail.

At the end of the summer, the new culture festival Wallflowers (September 8th to 17th, 2023) and the popular city (seduction) tours (September 15th to 17th, 2023) will take place. The “Mauerblümchen” festival is all regarding participation and a range of genres from theater and literature to dance and installations. Along the Nuremberg city wall, between the main train station and the Sterntor, places are used and brought into the cultural focus. With the city (seduction) tours – 1 weekend – 1000 routes – 1 motto! visitors have the opportunity to get to know Nuremberg and the neighboring city of Fürth from different perspectives. Under the motto “Key Experiences”, well-known personalities, artists and institutions provide insights into unknown or normally closed places.

City tours in Nuremberg

Nuremberg can be discovered in summer on one of the many different city tours. Since May 20, 2023, the CTZ has been offering under the title: “Nuremberg Quarters – Love at first step.” Tours through the Nuremberg quarters. There are two different routes to choose from: the northern route and the southern route. There are well-known highlights to discover, such as the Kaiserburg or the Lorenzkirche, but also unknown places, such as owner-managed shops, green oases or individual cafés. The guided tours take place every third Saturday of the month and each last one hour. There is a maximum of 20 places per tour.
