Summer in Belgium: Forecast, Heat Peaks, and What to Expect

Summer is fast approaching. For several weeks, the weather has warmed up in Belgium and it is not regarding to stop!

Are we heading towards a first heat wave, meteorologist Pascal Mormal qualifies the situation. “First we will talk regarding heat peak. By what you should know that the term ‘heat wave’ meets certain well-defined criteria. It takes at least five days in a row where it is 25° and three days where the temperature exceeds 30°. According to estimates, we are approaching 28-29° but not sure that we will reach the 30° required for the official term ‘heat wave’.”

Weather: “We are witnessing an anticyclonic blockage with a negative point”

According to the forecasts of the IRM, the temperature should increase as of this Friday. “We will approach 30° this Friday and these relatively high temperatures for the season should continue until Tuesday. Afterwards we will return to around 24°, which is still above normal for the season.”

Currently the temperatures are quite different between the coast and the center of the country. The next heat peak should standardize temperatures across the country.

As for the summer ahead of us, Pascal Mormal cautiously estimates that we should have a good summer. “Always be careful with seasonal trends. A priori, we are on the basis of a warmer than average summer. According to the forecast models, we would have 1° of positive anomaly. As for rainfall, it’s still a bit unclear.”
