Summer Construction Updates in Brussels: Road Closures, Tunnels, and Infrastructure Projects

As often in Brussels, summer rhymes with building sites. One week before the summer break, Brussels Mobility has announced “a number of major interventions” to come in the coming months.

Launched in June, the renovation of the Bailli and Vleurgat tunnels on Avenue Louise will continue this summer. “The tube of the two tunnels in the direction of La Cambre is closed until July 20 (traffic is carried out in two directions in the tube towards the center). From July 21 and until August 28, it will be the turn of the tube of the tunnels towards the center to be closed (traffic on a lane towards La Cambre and only on the surface via the side towards the center). For the start of the school year, the tunnels will reopen on a strip in each direction and work will continue only at night.

Disturbances also in the underground passages in the east of Brussels. From July 1 to August 27, the Tervuren and Woluwe tunnels will be closed. “On the program: removal of asbestos, repair of damage to the concrete of the ceilings and anti-rust protection.” Asbestos removal also at the Arts-Loi tunnel, with a closure from July 22 to the end of August.

Finally, other underground infrastructures will be disturbed, but only in the evening. Night closures of the Trône tunnel will notably continue until the end of October. In addition, “the Madou tunnel will be closed at night until the end of September and the Reyers-Centre and Rogier tunnels until the end of December. From September, night work will also be carried out in the Porte de Namur tunnel (until March 2024) and the Botanique tunnel (until early 2024). In all these tunnels, the concrete of the ceilings will be repaired and protected once morest corrosion.”

On the surface, major interventions are planned. The Beaulieau Bridge (E411) will take place this summer. “This involves the complete renovation of the bridge deck, including expansion joints, waterproofing, pavement and guardrails. This work will take place in two phases: in July and August 2023 on the Ixelles/city center tracks, in summer 2024 on the tracks towards Auderghem/suburbs. The lanes on which the work is being carried out will be closed to traffic and traffic will be transferred to the other 2 lanes, set to a strip in each direction.

Several construction sites for cycle paths and pedestrian infrastructures will be on the agenda. The works undertaken at the Jette cemetery and on the Petite Ceinture are continuing. Avenue du Diamant will be repaved. Similarly, “the sidewalks will be redone on avenue Brugmann, rue de l’Hôtel des Monnaies, rue du Progrès, avenue de la Reine and avenue du Diamant.” A cyclo-pedestrian footbridge will be built on rue du Scepter by Beliris.

Finally, like every summer, the Stib takes advantage of a lower influx to undertake heavy construction sites. It is mainly the Middle Belt that will be impacted. “On Avenue Général Wahis, inconveniences are to be expected at the intersection with Avenue Léopold III towards Montgomery for the relocation of the tram stop. A little further on this axis, at the Lambermont/Princess Elisabeth intersection, the STIB is renewing the tram tracks, which leads to traffic on narrower tracks. Disturbances also place Louise and chaussée de Neerstalle as part of the major renovation of the forest axis. Not forgetting the vast construction site for tram 10 which is impacting Neder-over-Heembeek.
