Summer Chill Brings No Respite: Staying Alert to the Lingering Shadow of Dengue Fever

Asunción, IP Agency.- In the last two weeks, Paraguay registered only four confirmed cases of dengue, “this suggests that this summer we could have an epidemic of a smaller magnitude than the one experienced in the last epidemic, explained the general director of Health Surveillance, Andrea Ojeda.

At the end of last weeks (SE) 37 and 38, four confirmed cases of dengue were identified. Likewise, four hospitalized patients associated with the virus were also recorded in this period: one of them confirmed, corresponding to the 65 to 69 age group, while the rest are listed as probable; two in the 0 to 4 year old group and one in the 20 to 24 year old group.

“Although we are experiencing declines in most of the country’s departments, we cannot let our guard down to prevent a severe epidemic in the coming months,” said the epidemiologist.

He recalled that the circulation of dengue continues throughout the year, because Paraguay is a country endemic to the virus, reported the Ministry of Health.

Regarding the epidemiological situation, he stated that several weeks ago the curve of dengue cases in the country experienced a plateau, maintaining a downward trend.

He explained that there is a risk of an increase in cases due to climate change; Added to this is the risk of introducing the DENV-3 serotype and the oropouche virus into the country, so it is essential to be prepared and continue with breeding control actions, in order to prevent a large-scale epidemic.

“Comparing with historical data, we can see a delay in the start of the new epidemic cycle, which is the usual period of dengue outbreaks,” said Ojeda.

He indicated that the first outbreaks of the disease are usually observed during this period. However, so far case notifications remain much lower for this time of year.
