Sullivan arrives in Beijing in bid to manage strained relations

The Associated Press said that the goal of Sullivan’s visit is limited, which is to continue communication in a relationship that collapsed for a long time between 2022 and 2023, and the visit is not expected to result in any major statements, although Sullivan’s meetings may lay the groundwork for a possible final summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping before Biden leaves the White House in January.

Sullivan is scheduled to hold talks with Wang Yi, the foreign minister who also serves as director of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee.

Already chilly relations entered a deep freeze after former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, now a senior member of the US Congress, visited Taiwan in August 2022.

Hopes for a restoration of relations were dashed in February 2022 when a Chinese spy balloon flew over the United States before being shot down by the US military.

During a meeting between Sullivan and Wang in Vienna in May 2023, the two countries launched a delicate process to put their relations back on track.

For its part, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that relations with the United States “remain at a critical juncture,” noting that the two sides are communicating on climate and other issues, but accused the United States of continuing to restrict and suppress China.

It is worth noting that Watt and Sullivan have met twice more since May of last year in a third country, once in Malta and the other in Thailand, and this week’s talks will be their first in Beijing.
