Khem Chand, General Secretary of Sukkur Chowhara Market, said that dates are cultivated on several thousand hectares in Sukkur and Khairpur districts.

He said that 90% of chhohara is made from dates, out of which a large quantity is exported to Dubai.

In both the districts, about one and a half lakh hectares are under palm cultivation, yielding two and a half lakh tonnes of dates annually, of which a large quantity is made into chhohara.

According to Khemchand, dates and chhohara are also made in Dera Ghazi Khan in Pakistan and traders there send chhora to the Sukkur market.

He said that a few years ago, he used to export directly to India, but due to additional taxes, Chhohara is now sent to Dubai, from where his products are bought by traders from many other countries, including India and Bangladesh.

According to Khemchand, the brown colored chhohara is used in Pakistan while the yellow one is sent abroad.

Khemchand said that if the government creates processing zones, more good quality dates can be exported.

Qalb Abbas, a contractor making chohara, said that as soon as the date crop is ready in Sukkur, the yellow duka (raw date) buds are cut.

‘After washing the dates with clean water, they are boiled in large tubs, after which they are kept in the sun for three days to dry.’

According to Qalb-e-Abbas, dates are dried to form brown or black chhohars, but if the color is cut into it, yellow color comes out.

He said that July 20 to August 20 is the season for making chhohara from dates.

‘The palm tree needs a lot of sun to grow. If there is no sunshine during the rainy season, the chhohara does not dry quickly, which affects its quality.’

Ali Baig, a laborer making chhohara, said that making chhohara is a very laborious work.

When the boiling dates are carried on the shoulders to dry in this scorching heat, the heat of the dates in the baskets is very bad for the health.

‘Sometimes hot water falls on the body and burns.’
