The US National Coffee Association reports that just over half of coffee drinkers prefer adding a sweetener to their morning drink. If a person needs to drink a lot of coffee during a busy day or to work the night shift, then they add a lot of unnecessary sugar to their diet.
Harvard Medical School says that eating added sugar can contribute to negative health effects such as high blood pressure, inflammation, weight gain, diabetes and fatty liver disease. Honey has slightly more calories than sugar according to Healthline, but since one would need less of it to get the same sweet taste, it will probably save calories. It also has a lower glycemic index than sugar, which means it won’t spike your blood sugar. Honey is distinguished from other sweeteners and sugar in that it also contains trace amounts of minerals and vitamins.
According to the Perfect Daily Grind, one potential drawback to using honey to sweeten coffee is that it has its own flavour. Sugar is distinguished in this case because it adds sweetness without affecting the flavor of the coffee. But this point can be overcome by choosing a suitable type of honey for use. In this context, experts advise using acacia and alfalfa honey, which are good options for neutral flavors.
