In addition to drug treatment, IBD patients need to follow a balanced diet, which contributes to relieving symptoms and strengthening immunity to fight infections. Although IBD includes both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, there are foods that you should eat and others that you should avoid.

Second: It is forbidden to eat it

Avoid excessive intake of dietary fiber, as it increases abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Avoid foods that may help to speed up the bowel movement abnormally and thus cause diarrhea, such as fresh or raw fruits and vegetables, prunes and caffeinated drinks.

Decrease the intake of sweets in the diet, such as juices, candy and soda, to help reduce watery diarrhea.

Add foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids to the diet. These fats may have an anti-inflammatory effect. Fatty acids are found in fish, such as: salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines.

Foods should be of small size and served more than once, unlike large meals.

Doctors recommend a set of additional recommendations for them:

Avoid eating nuts, seeds, beans and grains.

If you are lactose intolerant, you should follow a diet that is free of lactose, which is found in dairy products such as cheese, milk and ice cream.

If signs such as stool change color to dark green with an unpleasant odor appear, it is necessary to avoid fatty foods and eat low-fat or fat-free foods.

Doctors recommend taking nutritional supplements in case of decreased appetite and difficulty eating solid foods, but under medical supervision.
