Suez Canal Authority clarifies the truth about selling Egypt’s most important vital artery for a trillion dollars

This denial came following some Egyptian social media sites circulated an audio clip claiming that the government intends to sell the Suez Canal for one trillion dollars. The Cabinet’s media center contacted the Suez Canal Authority, which denied the news.

The Suez Canal Authority clarified in an official statement via Facebook that the information contained in the audio clip is fake and has no connection to reality, stressing that the Suez Canal will remain fully owned by Egypt and subject to its sovereignty, whether in its management, operation or maintenance, and the entire staff of the Canal Authority, including employees, technicians and administrators, will remain Egyptian citizens.

The Authority stressed that the canal or any of its constitutionally protected facilities cannot be touched under Article 43 of the Egyptian Constitution, which stipulates that “the state is committed to protecting, developing and preserving the Suez Canal as an international waterway owned by it, and is also committed to developing the canal sector as a distinguished economic centre.”

The Authority called on citizens not to be led by lies and to obtain information from reliable sources.

The Egyptian Cabinet’s Media Center called on the media and social media users to be accurate in what is published, and not to pay attention to news from unknown sources. In case of any inquiries in this regard, please refer to the official website of the Suez Canal Authority or the Authority’s Facebook page.
