At least 650 cases of this mysterious infection have been recorded worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Friday.

About a third of the cases have been recorded in the UK and 216 cases are recorded in the United States, reports CNN.

Nearly 75% of patients are under the age of five and were healthy before developing the disease.

The common viruses that usually cause hepatitis have all been ruled out as possible causes of this unexplained disease that affects children, according to CNN.

Researchers are examining the possibility that environmental causes, toxins or co-infection with another virus are responsible for this mysterious hepatitis.
