Sudanese army demands repossession of radio and television headquarters – Jornal OPaís

The paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized the headquarters of Sudan Radio and Television in the first weeks of the conflict, which began on April 15, 2023, which resulted from growing tensions between its commander and the head of the armed forces.

In a statement at midday yesterday, the military said it had seized buildings in the city of Omdurman and that RSF fighters had left the area.

The military also published images online showing its soldiers inside buildings.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces declared in a statement posted on social media that Sudanese troops “managed to take the headquarters of the Sudanese Broadcasting Corporation from the Dagalo terrorist militia – a reference to the leader of the RSF, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo – and from foreign mercenaries”.

“The armed forces offer this great victory as a gift to the generous Sudanese people, who showed patience”, he adds, before claiming “eternity” for the “martyrs” killed in the fighting, without giving an account of the casualties suffered. The RSF has not yet reacted to the demand made by the regular army.

The occupation of the national radio and television headquarters taken from the city occurred following months of intense fighting between the belligerent parties.

The conflict destroyed Khartoum and other cities in the country. In the western region of Darfur, the fighting took a different form, with brutal attacks by the RSF, predominantly made up of Islamists, once morest civilians of African ethnicity and in which thousands of people were killed.

In January, the International Criminal Court prosecutor said he had “clear conclusions” that there is reason to believe that both sides committed war crimes in Darfur.

According to United Nations agencies, more than 10 million people were forced to leave their homes, either to safer areas inside Sudan or to neighboring countries.
