Sudan – The Sudanese army said on Sunday that its forces are fighting in the city of Singa, the capital of Sennar State (south), which is witnessing a large wave of displacement of residents.
Army spokesman Nabil Abdullah said in a statement: “Our forces in Singa are steadfast and cohesive and are fighting the enemy with determination and high morale.”
He added: “Our forces in Singa are holding on to their positions and their morale is sky high.”
In the same context, eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency on Sunday that thousands were displaced from the city of Singa as a result of the clashes.
Witnesses reported that the displaced people moved by car and on foot towards the city of Al-Dinder (east of Sennar State) and to the city of Al-Hawata in Gedaref State (east).
Singa is regarding 60 kilometers away from the city of Sennar, which recently witnessed an attack by the Rapid Support Forces.
On Saturday evening, the Rapid Support Forces announced that they had taken control of the headquarters of the 17th Infantry Division of the Sudanese army in the city of Singa, the capital of Sennar State (south).
The announcement came hours following the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, visited Sennar State and inspected the UN forces in Sennar City, which was attacked by the Rapid Support Forces last Tuesday, according to a statement from the Sovereignty Council media.
On Tuesday, the army was able to repel the attack on the city of Sennar, and announced that it had inflicted heavy losses in lives and equipment on the Rapid Support Forces.
On Monday, the Rapid Support Forces announced their control over the “Jebel Moya” area, which has a strategic location linking the states of Sennar, Al-Jazeera and the White Nile, following violent battles with the army.
On Saturday, the International Organization for Migration announced that 370 families were displaced from the Jebel Moya areas, as a result of armed clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.
Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemeti), have been waging a war that has left regarding 15,000 dead and regarding 8.5 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.
There have been increasing calls from the United Nations and international organizations to spare Sudan a humanitarian disaster that might push millions to famine and death due to food shortages caused by the fighting that has spread to 12 of the country’s 18 states.
