A video clip showing a group of fighters believed to be affiliated with the Sudanese army celebrating the beheading of people and carrying them in their hands sparked great anger in the Sudanese street. A statement issued by the official army spokesman said that an investigation would be conducted into the incident.
The army statement, published on social media, said: “In light of the shocking content of videos circulated on Thursday, showing individuals with two severed heads, the armed forces clarify that they are currently conducting an investigation into the matter and those involved will be held accountable if the results of the investigation prove that they belong to our forces.”
The statement stressed that the Sudanese army “is committed to the laws and customs of war and the rules of conduct during military operations.”
A number of soldiers appeared in the clip; Some of them wear Sudanese army uniforms; They were celebrating in a “hysterical” way, and one of them was carrying one of the severed heads, threatening the fighters of the Rapid Support Forces.
Human rights activists, media figures, and politicians expressed their extreme anger over the incident, considering that what the clip showed confirms the existence of organized terrorism.
The Darfur Lawyers Association described the scene as “abhorrent and far from the ethics of war and the ideals and morals of the Sudanese.”
The Association confirmed that it is investigating the video with jurists, those interested in international law and human rights, and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
She said in a statement on Friday: “This ugly scene demonstrates to local, regional and international public opinion the extent of the horror and violence of the doctrine of the army and its allies among the Brotherhood.”
For its part, the Rapid Support Forces strongly criticized the incident, and said that it has thousands of captured army officers and soldiers, but they enjoy all the rights stipulated by international law in dealing with prisoners of war.
