Sudanese activists: 12 civilians killed, 20 injured in bombing of market in El Fasher

Sudan – Sudanese activists reported on Wednesday evening that 12 civilians were killed and 20 others were injured in artillery shelling that targeted the livestock market in the city of El Fasher in North Darfur State, western Sudan.

The Coordination of the Resistance Committees of El Fasher (activists) added in a statement that “the artillery shelling today, Wednesday, on the livestock market in the city of El Fasher, left 12 civilian martyrs and 20 wounded with varying injuries.”

The coordination committee indicated that “there were other deaths and injuries in a number of homes and mosques that have not been counted.”

Earlier on Wednesday, the coordination committee reported in a statement that “the city of El Fasher was subjected to a violent attack with heavy artillery by the Rapid Support Forces, which intensively targeted the south and west of the city, the livestock market, the vegetable market, and the Al-Radeef neighborhood.”

Until 21:00 (GMT), there was no comment from the Rapid Support Forces regarding this.

Since May 10, Al-Fasher has witnessed clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, despite international warnings of battles in the city, which is the center of humanitarian operations for all Darfur states (west).

In the context, the International Organization for Migration announced on Wednesday evening that the number of displaced persons in Sennar State (southeast) has reached 136,130 people since June 24.

The international organization stated in a statement that clashes continued between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces in the cities of Singa, Sennar and Ad-Dinder, in Sennar State.

She pointed out the increase in displacement from the affected sites and neighboring areas, as 15,600 people were displaced yesterday, Tuesday, from the cities of “Sennar, Singa, Al-Dinder, and Al-Suki.”

On Sunday, the International Organization for Migration announced the displacement of more than 55,000 people from the city of Singa and the surrounding villages in Sennar State, as a result of clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.

For regarding a week, Sennar State has been witnessing violent clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces with the aim of controlling the main cities in the state.

This comes as part of a war waged by the Sudanese army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemeti), since mid-April 2023, which has left regarding 15,000 dead and regarding 10 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.

There have been increasing calls from the United Nations and international organizations to spare Sudan a humanitarian disaster that might push millions to famine and death due to food shortages caused by the fighting that has spread to 12 of the country’s 18 states.
