Sudan – Yesterday, Sunday, Khartoum expressed its aspiration to cooperate with the African Union and discuss ending the freeze on Sudan’s membership in the continental bloc.
This came during a meeting between Sudanese Foreign Minister Awad Hussein Ali and the Chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, on Saturday evening, on the sidelines of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation summit held in the Gambian capital, Banjul, according to what was published by the official Sudanese News Agency, “SUNA,” on Sunday.
The agency stated that the Sudanese minister “expressed his aspiration to cooperate with the African Union Commission, and to discuss lifting the decision to freeze Sudan’s membership in the union, as it is one of the founding countries of it and all African institutions.”
She added that this “ensures Sudan’s involvement in all issues within the African House.”
The African Union decided to freeze Sudan’s membership in the continental bloc on October 27, 2021, two days following the President of the Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, imposed “exceptional measures,” including dissolving the Sovereignty Council and the Transitional Council of Ministers, arresting ministers and politicians, and declaring a state of emergency.
“SUNA” quoted Faki as emphasizing “the interest of the African Commission to find urgent solutions (to the war that broke out between the army and the Rapid Support Forces) in a way that achieves the aspirations of the Sudanese people and preserves their gains.”
Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been waging a war that has left regarding 15,000 dead and more than 8 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.
UN and international calls have increased to spare Sudan a humanitarian catastrophe that might push millions to famine and death, as a result of food shortages due to the fighting that has spread to 12 of the country’s 18 states.
