The Sudanese army announced on Sunday evening that the “operational situation is stable” in all cities of the country, which has been witnessing an armed conflict between it and the Rapid Support Forces for 3 weeks.
Despite this, the army spoke of “some skirmishes with the rebel militia (referring to the Rapid Support Forces), which are distributed in parts of the three cities of the capital (Khartoum, Omdurman, and Khartoum North).”
The army announced the arrest of a number of support forces militants, and the escape of another group to the west of the country on board 40 vehicles.
These developments coincide with the Saudi city of Jeddah hosting representatives of both sides of the conflict, to discuss ways to end the crisis.
And Saudi Arabia and the United States announced in a joint statement on Friday night “the start of preliminary talks” in Jeddah between representatives of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces.
The two countries urged the parties to the conflict to “seriously engage” in these talks, until a “ceasefire and end to the conflict” is reached.
On Sunday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, arrived in Jeddah for talks on Sudan, a spokeswoman announced, and a UN official confirmed that Griffiths would meet representatives of both sides.
Since the fifteenth of last April, the battles in Sudan between the army and the Rapid Support Forces have resulted in hundreds of deaths and tens of thousands of displaced persons.
