Sudan Conflict: United Nations Reports Disturbing Sexual Violence Against Women and Girls

More than 53 women and girls in Sudan have been subjected to sexual violence, during the fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since mid-April, according to what the United Nations announced.

Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said on Monday that his office had received reports of sexual violence once morest at least 53 women and girls in the Sudanese conflict.

“Shocked by the allegations of sexual violence, particularly rape,” Türk added.

Death and destruction

For his part, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned, on Monday, that Sudan is drowning in death and destruction at an unprecedented speed, at the start of a conference hosted by Geneva to coordinate the delivery of aid to this country, where the war has been going on for more than two months.

“The scale and speed of Sudan’s descent into death and destruction is unprecedented,” Guterres told the conference participants. “Without strong additional support, Sudan might quickly become a place of lawlessness and spreading insecurity across the region.”

Since April 15, Sudan has been witnessing battles between the Sudanese army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces, led by his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
