The conflict in Sudan is creating a “disaster” for health care.

This is the worrying conclusion drawn by the regional director of the World Health Organization for the Eastern Mediterranean.

Dr Ahmed Al-Mandhari gave an update on the health situation in Sudan where deadly clashes between the forces of rival generals have entered their third week, only 16% of health facilities are still functioning in the capital Khartoum.

“In figures, regarding 61% of medical institutes in Khartoum have ceased to function due to direct military attacks, military occupation of these institutes and dismissal of their staff. 23% of hospitals in Khartoum are partially functioning, and 16% are functioning at full capacity. This is the health situation in Sudan, especially in the conflict zones. “said Dr. Ahmed Al-Mandhari, regional director of the World Health Organization’s office for the Eastern Mediterranean.

Until gunfire erupted in the streets of Al Fasher this month, the capital of North Darfur state had several main hospitals including the large teaching hospital, the Saudi hospital, a hospital Pediatric and Southern Hospital.

Now, following two weeks of bloodshed that have seen terror return to the region, those options are narrowed.

“Many people who are active and trained in the health care sector are fleeing Sudan… Many NGOs and non-NGOs are withdrawing due to direct attacks. It is a real disaster,” Ahmed Al-Mandhari added.

Observers fear that the small strides made to address the country’s health challenges – from extreme hunger and malnutrition to dengue fever and malaria, and the widespread lack of basic sanitation facilities – will be wiped out by the civil war.
