Sudan – Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan met with the Director of Egyptian Intelligence Abbas Kamel yesterday, Friday, in the eastern city of Port Sudan, and discussed with him the challenges facing the two countries.
The council explained in a statement that Al-Burhan met Kamel in Port Sudan, and discussed with him “Sudanese-Egyptian relations and the challenges facing the two countries.”
The meeting comes two days after US envoy Tom Perriello announced the cancellation of the Cairo meeting with the Sudanese government due to a “breach of protocol,” while Khartoum said the meeting was cancelled “for reasons related to the US delegation,” without providing further explanation.
The meeting was scheduled to be held in Cairo after Egyptian-American contacts, against the backdrop of the absence of the Sudanese government delegation from talks on the crisis in the country that began on August 14 in the Swiss city of Geneva, in response to an American invitation issued on July 23.
During the meeting, Al-Burhan praised Egypt’s role in “supporting and assisting Sudan within the framework of the historical and fraternal bilateral relations that bind the two countries.”
The statement quoted the Egyptian intelligence chief as stressing “his country’s keenness on the security and stability of Sudan.”
Kamel expressed his “hope to turn the page on the war quickly, to stop the suffering of the Sudanese citizen.”
The statement did not specify the date of the Egyptian intelligence chief’s arrival in Sudan or the duration of his visit.
In mid-April 2023, war broke out between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, leaving about 18,800 dead and nearly 10 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.
There are increasing international and UN calls to end this war in order to spare Sudan a humanitarian catastrophe that has begun to push millions to famine and death due to food shortages caused by the fighting that has spread to 13 of the 18 states.
