Sudan.. 20 civilians killed in Sennar and Zalingei in battles between the army and the Rapid Support Forces

Sudan – Sudanese activists and civil society organizations reported yesterday, Sunday, that 20 civilians were killed in the city of Sennar in Sennar State (southeast) and the city of Zalingei, the center of Central Darfur State (west), as a result of fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, while the latter bombed the city of El Fasher in North Darfur State (west).

The Al Fasher Resistance Committees (activists) reported in a statement yesterday, Sunday, that the “Rapid Support” continued to bomb the Abu Shouk camp for the displaced in the city of Al Fasher, the center of North Darfur State (west), and 4 shells fell on the camp, without further details.

For its part, the General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugees Camps (civil) stated in a statement on Sunday that “the suffering of the displaced continues in the camps of (the) Darfur region as a result of the aerial and artillery bombardment by the army and the Rapid Support Forces.”

The statement added: “The Rapid Support Forces are carrying out indiscriminate artillery shelling against the displaced in Abu Shouk camp, as well as against civilians in El Fasher.”

According to the statement, Sudanese army aircraft bombed the “Five Minutes” camp in Zalingei, killing 5 people and wounding 3 others on Saturday evening.

The Sudanese army has not commented on this matter until 17:55 GMT.

Since May 10, Al-Fasher has witnessed clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, despite international warnings of battles in the city, which is the center of humanitarian operations for all Darfur states (west).

The Rapid Support Forces control 4 states in Darfur out of 5, including Central Darfur State.

In the south of the country, the Sudan Doctors Network (non-governmental) said in a statement on Sunday that “15 people were killed and others were injured as a result of artillery shelling by the Rapid Support Forces on the city of Sennar on Saturday.”

The statement added: “The indiscriminate shelling caused a humanitarian disaster as a result of targeting a camp sheltering displaced people, who were taken to the city’s teaching hospital.”

In turn, the “Call of the Middle” (a civil entity) explained in a statement on Sunday that “the number of people killed in the bombing that targeted the Rapid Support Forces in Sennar reached 15 dead, including displaced people, in addition to many injured.”

The statement indicated that “the Rapid Support Forces targeted, during the bombing, a shelter for the displaced and a number of residential neighborhoods.”

The Rapid Support Forces did not comment on the matter until 17:55 GMT.

The Rapid Support Forces attacked Sennar State on June 24, and took control of a number of cities, including Singa, the capital of Sennar State, on the 29th of the same month.

Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been waging a war that has left about 18,800 dead and nearly 10 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.

There are growing international and UN calls to end the war in order to spare Sudan a humanitarian catastrophe that has begun to push millions to famine and death due to food shortages caused by the fighting that has spread to 13 of the 18 states.
