Succession and Controversies: Sheikh Talal Fahd Al-Sabah as President of the Olympic Council of Asia

2023-07-12 12:33:00

We congratulate Sheikh Talal Fahd Al-Sabah as President of the Olympic Council of Asia, succeeding his brother Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahd Al-Sabah, who was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense in the new Kuwaiti government, and as an extension of the path of his martyr father, Sheikh Fahd Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, founder of the Council in 1982.
And we congratulate the new council, which was elected a few days ago, to continue its successes, to be a support for the International Olympic Committee in its career, and to promote Asian sports to compete with other continents in various games.
However, we wonder regarding the mechanism for the nominations of representatives of member states in the electoral cycle of the Council, and whether the candidate is an independent who submits his candidacy papers, or must it be approved by his National Olympic Committee, because what happened in the recent elections raises many questions, following representatives from one country nominated, and who One committee competed for the presidency of the Council, even though one of them ran for the post a period before the other from the same committee, and why did it not agree on the most appropriate candidate and support him, in coordination with similar committees in other countries, as is the case in all elections, and at all levels?
And why insist on that, and divert the voices of the donor countries to one candidate over the other, and who among them has the support of his committee and his country for this responsibility, because working in continental and international organizations is a representation of the state first, and a culmination of the candidates’ efforts, in support of the sport’s march locally, and contributing to continental and international success.
The voices were dispersed, and we left a bad impression on others, that we do not agree in our choices, and the local personal conflict entered the continental arena, without the fault of the system from which we seek to work in the spirit of one team, similar to similar organizations in other continents.
On the other hand, we did not hear regarding the candidacy of our representative, Osama Al-Shaafar, who holds continental and international positions in the competition for the position of Vice President of the Council for the West of the Continent, neither from the National Olympic Committee, nor from the candidate himself before the elections, and coordination with other Olympic committees, whether in the West of the continent that We are from it, or with other countries, as is the practice in such elections, or is running for Arab, continental and international positions not our concern, and we leave the matter to the candidate and his relations and efforts, away from the official bodies of our Olympic Committee and the General Sports Authority, we want clarification from the concerned authorities regarding it, So that this is not repeated in running for international positions in the coming days.
