Doctors succeeded in performing the second operation to transplant a pig heart into a human body last September. The question now is: How was this patient’s condition one month following the operation was performed?
The doctors said that they did not see any signs of rejection or infection in the patient and that the heart was working on its own, according to what was published by the American network “CNN”.
American Lawrence Fawcett, 58 years old, underwent a surgery, which is only the second to be performed on a human, as the heart disease from which Fawcett suffers and his chronic diseases made him ineligible for a traditional human heart transplant.
Dr. Bartley Griffith, director of the heart and lung transplant program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, who performed the surgery, said: “The doctors caring for him believe his heart function is excellent now. We have no evidence of infection and no evidence of rejection at this time.”
“We are withdrawing all the medications that were supporting his heart in the beginning and now his heart is doing everything on its own,” said Dr. Mohamed Mohieldin, director of the heart transplant program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, adding that the focus now is on making sure the heart has the strength needed to perform routine functions.
