Already a weekend, and the time for the first conclusions – a little – hasty. Which franchises have negotiated the start of Free Agency 2023 well? Those who have managed to sign smart, do some cleaning or on the contrary, recruit beautiful people by paying the right price. Come on, let’s make a point!
A quick reminder, before we start: this assessment is only an assessment at D+3! In a few days, weeks, some teams will certainly be removed from this list, and we will not fail to tell you regarding them. In the meantime, we still wanted to make a dedication to all the franchises that have made a success of their start to the summer.
# Los Angeles Lakers
Rob Pelinka has done a great job of starting Free Agency 2023. The signing of Gabe Vincent is bound to come first in our minds, but let’s not forget the long-awaited and financially well-managed extensions by La La Land management. We think of Rui Hachimura and Austin Reaves, but especially of D’Angelo Russell, who accepted a contract of 37 million over two years, with a second year as a player option. An amount not that high for a decent player, capable of great things… but who shit himself in the Playoffs. At the same time, Dennis Schröder is gone, Troy Brown Jr too, and Malik Beasley should soon be the icing. Good game !
# Cleveland Cavaliers
Max Strus, Caris LeVert, Georges Niang. Three names to strengthen the Cavaliers behind the 3-point line, with two profiles specializing in long-range artillery and a player who extends to Ohio for not too much money. Koby Altman has negotiated his first summer turn pretty well, with some great signings to bring danger off the bench for the Cavs next season. On the output side? Robin Lopez should be left free, enough to free up a place in the painting… for a future recruitment in addition?
# Sacramento Kings
In Sacramento, the offseason went well, at least over the last three days. We take the same and start once more. Last season was historic, why change a team that works? Domantas Sabonis, Harrison Barnes, Alex Len, Trey Lyles… All have extended their adventure with the Kings. Monte McNair rhymes with success since Friday. Some names are still up for grabs, but Sac-Town’s early summer is well managed so far.
# Phoenix Suns
James Jones had to do something new with nothing during this Free Agency 2023. On Friday, the Suns only had a few players under contract, namely the star quartet of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Bradley Beal and Deandre Ayton. Nixie was therefore active from the start of hostilities, with no less than six signings for small amounts, just to fill the bench a little. Eric Gordon was added last night to this group which now has a dozen players ready to do battle next season. The Suns had to recruit, for cheap. They succeeded. So far, it’s flawless.
# Dallas Mavericks
Three signatures, but three choice signatures. Kyrie Irving, of course. Uncle Drew will continue his adventure in Texas, for 126 million over 3 years. A tidy sum and enormous talent, enough to satisfy everyone. With the talents of Kai, Dallas will be able to hope for great things. Luka Doncic can also count on the reinforcement of a former teammate: Seth Curry. Steph’s brother returns to the Unicorns, to provide support off the bench. Finally, Dwight Powell extended for not that much. Own !
# Indiana Pacers
A little in the same style as the Mavericks. Tyrese Haliburton, it’s locked down for the max. Alongside the extension of their leader for five seasons, the Pacers have offered Bruce Brown, handyman for the Nuggets during the Playoffs, and an important element of Denver’s NBA title. The price is a bit expensive, but it is a two-year contract for 45 million, but the second year is optional. We will therefore have to count on BB to give everything next year, and finally allow this team to find the Playoffs.
# Mention honorable : Brooklyn Nets
Cam Johnson retained despite competition to recruit him, Dennis Smith Jr and Loonie Walker recruited for a very clever price. And above all, the remaining course to try to attract Damian Lillard. Sean Marks’ job is a success so far, to be continued as the big menu starts now.
