From almiras and lockers to home appliances, there is one name we consider first, Godrej. The road to success is not always easy. There are various ups and downs that one has to overcome to achieve goals in life. One such story is that of Ardeshir Godrej, co-founder of the Godrej Brothers Company, also known as the Godrej Group. This company was established long before India gained independence. Even the Queen of England, who visited India in 1921, used Godrej’s products. Ardeshir was born in 1868, the first of six children of Burjorji and Dosibhai Gutaraji. The Gutarajs were a wealthy Parsi-Saurashtrian family from Mumbai. Ardesir’s father and grandfather Burjorji and Sorabji were real estate brokers. In January 1871, his father changed his surname to Godre.

Although his first venture selling surgical instruments failed, Ardeshir was determined to continue manufacturing in India. He was given a loan by industrialist and philanthropist Merwanji Kama to start a new lock manufacturing firm. Ardeshir Godrej quit his first job and started the Godrej Group on 7 May 1897 in a shed. His locks were cheaper than those imported from England, as he found that foreign-made locks had a spring that frequently broke.
First Made-in-India initiativeIt was the first ever Made-in-India initiative that changed history. By 1908, Godrej had patented the world’s first springless lock. In 1911, when King George V and Queen Mary visited India, their valuables were kept in Godrej safes.
As thefts increased in the country, locks became unreliable. Homes and businesses were at risk from burglars. Because they were very low quality handmade locks. It did not give them security. With these problems compounded, Ardeshir Godrej decided to manufacture the best quality locks in the country. He studied the lockers in detail. But Ardeshir was worried about the funds for the lock business. He branded his high security locks as Anchor. It started in a small shed in central Mumbai.

Unbreakable locks
Ardeshir Godrej used to sell these locks with a warranty document. Anchor locks were guaranteed to be unbreakable. Godrej has over time become a well-known company for manufacturing quality locks.
Eventually, Ardeshir Godrej expanded his business. A few years later, he launched a new range of locks, including the Guardian Locks. Soon it entered the almirah (wardrobe) business as well. Wardrobes manufactured by Godrej not only protect valuables from thieves but are also fireproof.
During the freedom struggle, India planned to boycott foreign-made goods. Ardeshir Godrej was greatly influenced by Balagangadhara Tilak, who in 1906 highlighted the importance of using goods produced in India. Thus Godrej launched the first Indian-made soap. In 1920, Godrej introduced Godrej No. 1 and Godrej No. 2 soaps made from natural products.
From Locks to Real Estate
The Godrej Group has a business heritage of over a century. And more than 28,000 employees work here. Moreover, many people around the world use at least one Godrej product in their daily life.
