SUCCESS STORIES #WOMENFACMED

My name is Asya Zubillaga Mares. I made the decision to study Medicine during high school, driven by the curiosity to know how the human body works, so I studied the Bachelor of Surgeon at the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla.

I chose the specialty in General Surgery from the Graduate Studies Division of the UNAM Faculty of Medicine due to a shocking experience during my first semester of university, when a classmate suffered from appendicitis that was not correctly diagnosed, which resulted in surgery. complicated. Later, during my internship, I had the opportunity to rotate through various medical areas, and I discovered a great interest in Surgery.

From boarding school to residency I have been at the “Dr. Manuel Gea González”, and my experience has been extremely enriching and a true honor. I like the idea that doctors put a lot of emphasis on the importance of staying up to date. My mentors, in addition to being exceptional surgeons, are wonderful people, and although residency can be challenging and exhausting, the hospital environment, the motivation to learn, along with the constant support I have received from them, are encouraging.

My greatest academic achievement was presenting a work that we did at the Gea González Hospital, titled “Frequency and factor associated with complications in gastrointestinal stomas.”in the Congress of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

Likewise, I have published several articles, but I would highlight the three most recent: “Use of the enhanced recovery protocol following surgery in laparoscopic cholecystectomy in patients with symptomatic cholelithiasis”, in which a study was carried out implementing the ERAS protocol in patients with cholelithiasis.

In “Laparoscopic management in an adult patient with intestinal obstruction secondary to congenital malrotation of the midgut: case report and review of the literature” An unusual case of malrotation is described in an adult patient in whom we performed successful laparoscopic surgery. And in “Hypoplasia of the asymptomatic left hepatic lobe, transsurgical, tomographic and pathological finding. Presentation of a rare entity”, we recorded an unusual anatomical variant during a laparoscopic plasty.

The experience of being a woman and a doctor is ambivalent; It brings great satisfaction, but at the same time presents challenges, especially in a field dominated by men. However, it is gratifying to see that society’s perception gradually changes and they value our work more.

To women who long to do the same thing as me, I would say never give up. The path may be challenging, but when it is a passion, the effort is completely worth it.
