Sander Gillé (ATP 24 in doubles) was pleased with the successful performance with Joran Vliegen (ATP 25), the pair having reached the semi-finals of the ATP 500 tennis tournament in Hamburg on Thursday, an event on clay with 1.831 .515 euros in Germany. The duo, seeded N.4, beat Dutchman Robin Haase (ATP 42) and Croatian Nikola Mektic (ATP 20) 6-7 (2/7), 7-5, 11/9.

The meeting started on Wednesday. “We were the best team yesterday,” analyzed Gillé. But the duo conceded the first set following missing a set point. The interruption forced by darkness did the Belgian-Belgian pair good, “to recover from this disappointment”, but “we had to start on the right foot” on Thursday. In wet conditions, Gillé and Vliegen managed to come back to one run everywhere, and win the super tie-break.

“We are very satisfied, both with the level displayed and with the result.” A semi-final in an ATP 500 tournament should “strengthen our position in the rankings and we can reach a final at this level, which we have never done and which is one of our objectives”, explained the native of ‘Hasselt.

After Hamburg looms a trip to the United States, where the pair want to use the ATP 500 in Washington “as preparation for the next two most important weeks, with the ATP 1000 in Toronto and Cincinnati.” With the trip, “the jet lag, different weather conditions and no hard surface preparation,” Washington would pick up the pace before the deadlines.

Gillé and Vliegen will then offer themselves a little rest following the Cincinnati tournament which ends on August 20. “We chose not to play Winston Salem to rest and be ready for the US Open”, which begins on August 28.
