It really stinks in the canton of Aargau – and not in the figurative sense. Farmers have not been allowed to bring their manure into the fields for months. «The manure hole is full, we won’t have any more space until tomorrow. We have to do something,” said farmer and SVP National Councilor Alois Huber to “ArgoviaToday” on Monday.

Huber tries to store his manure with other farmers. “But I can imagine that things will be tight for some farmers by next week because they no longer know where to put the manure,” he predicts. According to Huber, the manure holes are in danger of overflowing if something doesn’t happen quickly.

Even a change in the weather doesn’t solve the problem

The fields are currently a restricted zone because farmers are only allowed to distribute manure once more if the thermometer climbs above five degrees for seven days. Even if the weather forecast promises improvement for next week, the misery is far from over. Huber explains: “If it thaws now, we won’t be able to go to the fields. Then we have the same problem as in the autumn: it is far too wet to drive,” the SVP National Councilor continued to “ArgoviaToday”. The machines would tear up the fields or would not even be able to move because of the wetness.

According to Huber, if farmers don’t come up with a compromise solution soon, they will be forced to break the law and distribute their manure despite freezing temperatures.
