The Styrian SPÖ leader Anton Lang was confirmed as chairman in a direct election of all red party members of the Green Mark with 91.64 percent. The result was announced on Saturday at the state party conference in Kapfenberg, Upper Styria. Almost 47 percent, exactly 8,311, of the 17,692 members voted in the run-up to the party conference.

Lang was with a big smile on his face and joined Fleetwood Mac with “Don’t Stop” together with federal party chairman Andreas Babler. This was followed by a martial-rhythmic sound performance by the Drumatic Theater, which, among other things, hit drums with chains. Together with the title of the party conference, “Turning Point,” this was to be understood as a political signal: “Freed from all chains,” the moderator introduced. Lang probably wants to break away from the chains that bind him to his coalition partner ÖVP and aim for first place in the state elections in the fall.

State party manager Florian Seifter underlined this with his introductory words: The party conference should be “a real turning point following difficult times”. They want to “assume political leadership responsibility” once more at all levels. He welcomed “the next governor of Styria – Anton Lang”. Before that, the “urgently necessary turnaround” with Andi Babler must be achieved at the federal level, said Seifter. Carinthia’s governor Peter Kaiser, Lower Austria’s SPÖ leader Sven Hergovich and National Council member Jörg Leichtfried also came to Styria to support.

The direct election of the state party chairman is a novelty for the SPÖ Styria and was decided at the last party conference in 2020 in Trofaiach. Several events in all regions including a “program workshop” took place last year until December 16th for the direct election. Incidentally, Lang had no opposing candidates.
