After years of disputes with the Styrian Hospital Association (KAGes), the now 18-year-old Georg Polic was awarded the costs of treatment for his spinal muscular atrophy (SMS) by the Supreme Court. The money for the drug Spinraza was initially provided privately by donors, but now the KAGes has been obliged to pay 210,000 euros to the patient, said his lawyer Karin Prutsch-Lang.
The legal dispute lasted years and went through all instances. Georg Polic was initially refused treatment with Spinraza because this drug had previously been used primarily for babies and small children. After the KAGes did not want to carry out the treatment, private donors were found to cover the costs. The young person was finally treated with the syringes at the Linz Hospital of the Sisters of Mercy starting in 2019, one of which cost around 77,000 euros.
In 2021, Prutsch-Lang filed a lawsuit to ensure that the patient continued to be treated in Graz. The lawyer now also sought reimbursement of the treatment costs, although her request had initially been rejected in two instances. In July, the Supreme Court decided that the costs should be reimbursed.
Regarding the health of Georg Polic, who turned 18 on Sunday (September 23rd), his lawyer said that he is still being treated and that “his health is not only stable, but is continuing to improve.”
