Styria Poised for New Coalition Government: Kunasek and Drexler to Negotiate
Following last week’s decisive state elections, Styria is set for a new government, with the Styrian People’s Party (ÖVP) gearing up for coalition talks with the clear election winners, the FPÖ Styria, led by Mario Kunasek.
The ÖVP conceded defeat, acknowledging the election results while expressing respect for the will of the voters. Governor Christopher Drexler, the ÖVP state party chairman, emphasized his party’s commitment to Styria’s future.
“We suffered painful losses in the state elections. We not only accept this result, we respect it,” Drexler stated. “The Styrian People’s Party is motivated to enter into negotiations with the election winner, the FPÖ and Mario Kunasek.”
Drexler is confident that a coalition between the two parties would not only bring stability to Styria but also offer the best solutions for the region’s most pressing challenges.
“I am convinced that a coalition of the FPÖ and the Styrian People’s Party can not only offer the greatest stability for Styria, but that together our parties can best solve the most pressing challenges for our country.” he said. “We saw in the explorations that there is a very good basis for discussion. This makes me confident that I will be able to conduct quick, successful negotiations on a strong state government for the coming years.”
On Monday, November 25th, the expanded state party executive committee of the ÖVP unanimously entrusted Drexler with the responsibility of leading open-ended negotiations on the formation of the next Styrian government. He will be heading these discussions with Mario Kunasek and the FPÖ Styria.

Given the FPÖ’s controversial stances, do Styrian voters feel represented by this coalition, despite the historical losses of traditional parties?
“Governor Drexler has expressed confidence in forming a coalition with the FPÖ, citing stability and shared solutions as key benefits. But, knowing the FPÖ’s often controversial stance on issues, do you think Styrian voters are truly comfortable with this partnership, especially considering the historic losses suffered by established parties?” [[1](https://brusselssignal.eu/2024/11/austrias-right-wing-fpo-scores-landslide-win-as-dismay-over-planned-hard-left-coalition-grows/)]
