HAMBURG, Germany (AP) — Stuttgart ended Hamburg’s hopes of returning to the Bundesliga this year by winning 3-1 in the second leg of the playoffs.

Enzo Millot signed a double and Silas Katompa Mvumpa billed the third for the visitors. Hamburg had gone ahead through Sonny Kittel.

Stuttgart secured their stay in the top division by rounding off a 6-1 victory on aggregate.

It was Hamburg’s second unsuccessful attempt at promotion in a play-off once morest the team that finished third from bottom in the Bundesliga. The once giant of German soccer will have to complete a sixth season in the second division since they were relegated in 2018.

Losing 3-0 in the first leg, Hamburg needed a good start to keep their hopes up and Kittel excited the fans by scoring following six minutes.

Guirassy set up Millot for the equalizer shortly following the start of the second half

A mistake by goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes, Hamburg’s best in the first leg, gave Millot his second goal of the night following 64 minutes.

Kittel did not appreciate the French midfielder’s celebration in front of the home fans, which ended with a brawl with another rival player who came up to celebrate. Referee Bastian Dankert responded with two yellow cards.

Silas scored for Stuttgart in the seventh minute of added time.

Hamburg, the last active founding member of the Bundesliga, has finished in fourth or third place in all its seasons since being relegated to the second division. The first two ascend directly.
