Sturm Graz’s U19 team has taken another step towards promotion to the knockout phase of the UEFA Youth League. The Styrians defeated Dortmund 3-2 in a thrilling game at Borussia’s training center on Tuesday.
It was the second away win for coach Jürgen Säumel’s team after the 4-1 win at Stade Brest at the start. This was followed by a 1-1 draw against Club Bruges and a 1-3 draw against Sporting Lisbon in St. Veit.
Dortmund took the lead through Ousmane Diallo (17th) in the “prelude” to the Champions League duel between the two teams. Youba Koita (23rd) quickly equalized after a cross from Senad Mustafic. Sturm was doing well in the game, which didn’t change after the restart. A shot from Martin Kern was just cleared in front of the line (63′). A little later, Antonio Ilic (68′) surprised BVB goalie Robin Lisewski with a free kick from a tight angle into the near corner.
Grgic scores the winning goal
This time the response from the Germans, who had 17-year-old ÖFB youth team player Thierry Fidjeu-Tazemeta in the starting line-up, didn’t take long. Matthies Albert (79th) was able to head in unchallenged from close range. There were still no points for Borussia, as Leon Grgic (84th) scored after Oliver Sorg had failed to score against Lisewski.
Graz continues with a home game against Girona on November 27th. The first 22 teams qualify for the intermediate round, which will be played in spring 2025. Sturm has currently moved up to ninth place with seven points.
